The Sociology of Early Childhood brings a new perspective to the field of early childhood education, offering insights into how children's diverse backgrounds shape their life chances. In medieval society the idea of childhood did not exist; this is not to suggest that children were neglected, forsaken or despised. The idea of childhood is not to be confused with affection for children: it corresponds to an awareness of the particular nature of childhood, that particular nature which distinguishes the child from the adult, even the young adult.

This book is the culmination of a number of years of teaching and researching in Early Childhood Studies. The initial idea came from a conversation with Jenny Willan, a former colleague who suggested that there was a ‘gap’ in the sociological literature exploring the lives of young children. Sociology is a study of society, patterns of social relationships, social interaction and culture of everyday life. It is a social science that uses various methods of empirical investigation and critical analysis to develop a body of knowledge about social order, acceptance, and change or social virtuosobs.comogy is also defined as the general science of society.
